Syringomyelia is a condition with various causes in which fluid accumulates in an abnormal cavity within the spinal cord. The majority of syringomyelic cavities arise when the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid between the cranial and spinal compartments is impeded and cerebrospinal fluid is driven by cardiac pulsations into the cord parenchyma. Tumors and spinal trauma also cause syringomyelia by other mechanisms.
