The very basis of the Brown-Se´quard syndrome was challenged in 1892 by Frederick Mott, a young British neurologist who later achieved fame by establishing that general paralysis of the insane is due to syphilis and by helping to found the Maudsley Hospital for the mentally ill in London. Mott found that lateral spinal cord hemisections in monkeys led to ipsilateral sensory loss (rather than hyperaesthesia) and contralateral preservation of pain appreciation (rather than analgesia) below the level of the lesion (Mott, 1892). This raised anew questions relating to the consequences of lateral cord hemisection and the reason that they occur.
