Heterogeneity of type 1 diabetes is increasingly recognized as a potential barrier to effective prevention, reversal and treatment of the disease. In individuals with type 1 diabetes, there is great variation in the aggressiveness of the autoimmune attack, and loss of beta-cell function as evidenced by the different rates of C-peptide decline following symptomatic onset and in preclinical stages of type 1 diabetes, as well as in the time from appearance of serum islet autoantibodies until development of overt disease.
