Undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas (UCP) with osteoclast-like giant cells (OCGC), classifications proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO),1is equivalent to anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas(ACP). ACP was first described by Sommere et al. in 1954.2 ACP is a rare subtype of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which comprises only 0.25% of all pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cases.3 According to the Japan Pancreas Society, ACP is classified into three types: pleomorphic type, spindle-cell type and ACP with OCGC.4In this article, we prefer to use the WHO term ‘undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas (UCP)’ rather than ACP for consistency with the international literature.UCP imaging findings have been primarily described in individual case reports5,6in the field of diagnostic radiology.Only a few case series have been previously published.7,8Although UCP was believed to be notorious for its poor prognosis, recent study has reported that UCP with OCGC was better prognosis than pancreatic adenocarcinoma without OCGC.9Therefore, the diagnosis of UCP may not discourage from performing surgical resection, and it is worthwhile clarifying the imaging features of UCP for patient management. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate multidetector-row CT (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of UCP with and without OCGC.
