Measurement of fetal and neonatal cardiac functional parameters can aid diagnosis, assess disease severity, predict prognosis, and direct management strategies. Increasingly, more recent ultrasound technologies such as spectral or pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler tissue imaging(DTI) and speckle-tracking echocardiographic (STE) imaging are being used to undertake functional cardiac assessments in fetuses and neonates. However, echocardiographic measurements, especially in fetuses, tend to produce various sorts of errors causing the measured value to differ from the true value. Adult and pediatric studies reported a high intervendor variability of modern ultrasound technologies and recommended further evaluation of these techniques before adoption for clinical and research use. Previous work in fetuses and neonates has provided a wide range of myocardial functional and deformational values derived from different ultrasound vendors, precluding accurate comparisons among studies.
