Prognosis among the inherited cardiomyopathies varies according to underlying aetiology. When discussing prognosis with patients, tailor advice to the individual, including for clinical presentation, genetic causes, and evolving evidence based therapies. In HCM, 75% of patients live for at least 10 years following presentation (95% confidence interval 71.1 to 78.9%) as per a recent meta-analysis. This analysis, however, has several limitations and larger prospective studies with longer follow-up are required. Annual mortality was <1% for treated patients with ACM in a large cohort. Prognosis is difficult to define for DCM because of its insidious onset and heterogeneous nature. Five year survival was 55% for non-familial forms of DCM and 51% for patients with familial disease61 in an earlier retrospective observational study (99 patients with DCM). More recent studies suggest a more favourable outcome, especially for patients with idiopathic disease.
